Why I can help you
When I started in people management, I was a technical specialist excelling in learning and engagement. I began managing a learning team and leading our training strategy - but without formal management training, I was a terrible manager.
The circumstances were tough: I was coming off six months of unplanned sick leave right when I stepped into the role, and the team I inherited lacked the support and guidance needed to thrive.
Every day, I felt lost, anxious, and terrified of being ‘found out’ or making decisions that could harm my team or the business. I dreaded giving feedback, managing performance, and addressing poor behaviour. I constantly worried about how others perceived me and doubted my abilities.
Eventually, I was signed off with work-related stress. That was my turning point. I realised that I needed to confront these challenges head-on to build my leadership skills and improve. I sought out leadership and management training opportunities anywhere I went, which transformed my practice and boosted my confidence. It took immense effort, but I faced my fears and pushed through, just as Susan Jeffers advises.
